Placenames Australia (PA) welcomes any help you or your organisation can provide, no matter how small or large, either by
- supporting our Australian National Placenames Survey (ANPS) by taking up the challenge of being a volunteer researcher with us
- supporting PA with your annual membership, or by making a further financial contribution, that would help provide the infrastructure our volunteers need to do their research.
Contributing Information
Contributing information can be as simple as extracting information on placename text from eDocuments, manuscripts, books, journals, or newspapers (by using Trove, for example).
Placenames Australia has training material and documentation to help its researchers. To discover what we can provide in this respect, email the ANPS research director.
Each little bit of information contributed to our Survey helps in determining the final story of a placename’s origin, answering what we call the three WH- questions:
who named it,
why did they name it, and
when did they name it?
If you’d like to see the results of our Survey’s research, view our quarterly Newsletter – read it online, or ask us to email it to you. And see our other publications, all available online.
Financial Support
If you are unable to help as a researcher, why not take up an annual membership of PA (just $25 for individuals, or $250 for corporate and institutional members)? In doing this, or by making an even larger donation, you will assist our volunteer researchers to keep up their work, by funding such essentials as software subscriptions and internet server costs. (We do need to say that currently donations are not tax deductible.)
More information on how to make your financial contribution, for membership or otherwise, can be found on our Supporting Placenames Australia page.
